Hundreds of Australian Websites Attacked for #OpAustralia By Indonesian Hackers, Threats Made To Australia
site-deface-by-cyberfvcker-indonesian-d
Update: 9.06pm, 9.32pm. AEST. Check below for response of contact from at least one of the defacers.
Today has seen hundreds of websites owned and operated by Australian private businesses defaced by Indonesian hackers who are opposed to the recent news that Australia and NSA together had spied on Indonesia in the past, see here.
The spree of defacement’s was tipped off to me by a twitter user (@joshua0).
After a quick search of the #OpAustralia tag within twitter it has become clearly obvious that the hackers had been at it all weekend leaving a huge list of sites, most if not all of which are still defaced.
The attacks have left a few different defacement pages across the sites and many of them appear to be running Joomla and are on shared hosting in a few different locations around the world.
Now i’m not really sure why attacking private, small business is the thing to do but it seems its just how it rolls these days.  If your site has been breached i would suggest contacting your hosting provider and asking them to explain why and how.
So far i have found about 170 sites via twitter but there appears to be many more. See all defacement submitted to Zone-H with .au domains here
 Update:
1.Its come to my attention this “#OpAustralia” is being mistake for theAnonymousbased#OpAustralia and this is not the case.
This OpAustralia is being carried out by Indonesian hackers due to recent information surfacing about trade agreements as stated above.
2.The attacks are also now causing a bit of stir from the Australian public due to the nature of innocent websites and charities or business who devote time to helping others.
Shortly after this occurred i contacted one of the emails within the deface and have had the following response.
Message to Australia
Stop spying Indonesia, If Australia still spy on Indonesia, we do not hesitate Indonesian Hacker reluctant to undermine Australia website
Tell the Australian government ..
Stop all forms of entering Indonesia ..
Or we will make your internet network was destroyed ..
We will stop if pemerinta Australia to say sorry to Indonesia
The second message is a comment to the response and results in a direct threat to Australian websites and internet.
Stop spying Indonesia !
Or Australian Internet Was Destroyed By Indonesia !
There has also been a event page on facebook made for this, found here.

NSA: Australia and US used climate change conference to spy on Indonesia

Australian spy agency the Defence Signals Directorate worked alongside America’s National Security Agency in mounting a massive surveillance operation on Indonesia during the United Nations climate change conference in Bali in 2007.
The newly-elected prime minister Kevin Rudd was making his first high-profile international foray at the conference, at the personal invitation of Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
A new document from whistleblower Edward Snowden reveals the intelligence agencies were trying to collect the phone numbers of Indonesian security officials.
It was not a particularly successful mission – the only tangible outcome the NSA and the DSD could boast of for all the expenditure of time, staff and other resources was the mobile phone number of Bali’s chief of police.
But its revelation is likely to exacerbate tensions between Australia and Indonesia, which flared after Fairfax newspapers revealed last week that Australian diplomatic posts across Asia were being used to intercept phone calls and data.
That story prompted the Indonesian foreign minister, Marty Natalegawa, to declare it was "not cricket" for Australia to spy on the region at the behest of the United States and that he had sought clarification from his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop on an important issue of "trust".
"If Australia was itself subjected to such an activity do you consider it as being a friendly act or not? We are deeply concerned and it's something we cannot accept," he said.
''I'm not sure what is the right term in Australian terminology. I guess it's not cricket.''
Indonesia on Friday called in the Australian ambassador in Jakarta, Greg Moriarty, for an explanation.
The revelation that DSD co-operated in spying at the 2007 Bali conference is likely to be particularly galling for Indonesia.
Rudd attended the conference, along with five ministers, just 10 days after he was elected, and at the personal invitation of Yudhoyono, who was the first world leader to call to congratulate the new prime minister.
The conference was seen at the time as something of a diplomatic triumph for the Rudd government, with Rudd highlighting Australia’s new approach to climate change by formally ratifying the Kyoto protocol, personally handing the document to UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, and using the conference to signal a new diplomatic shift towards Asia.
A detailed account of how the operation was mounted is included in a weekly report from the NSA base at Pine Gap in Australia, one of the agency’s biggest overseas bases.
The report, dated January 2008, deals with surveillance of the climate conference which ran from 3-14 December, attracting 10,000 officials, journalists, activists and others.
Ban described climate change as “the moral challenge of our generation” at the conference and it eventually agreed the “Bali road map” which was supposed to pave the way to an international agreement at the 2009 Copenhagen conference.
But the NSA’s base in Australia, at Pine Gap, was less interested in combating climate change than collecting the numbers of Indonesian security officials in case of a future emergency.
The document says the NSA worked with the DSD “in support of this target”. It adds: “The goal of the development effort was to gain a solid understanding of the network structure should collection be required in the event of an emergency.”
At the DSD’s request, an Indonesian linguist was added to the team to monitor and scan communications.
Summing up at the end of the operation, the NSA said: “Highlights include the compromise of the mobile phone number for Bali’s chief of police.
“Site efforts revealed previously unknown Indonesian communications networks and postured us to increase collection in the event of a crisis.”
Asked about the Fairfax report, based on documents published by German magazine Der Spiegel, the prime minister, Tony Abbott, declined to comment on specifics of intelligence activities, but he insisted any activity carried out by Australian officials was within the law.
"Well, the thing about every Australian governmental agency is that we all operate in accordance with the law," Abbott told reporters on Thursday.
"Every Australian governmental agency, every Australian official, at home and abroad, operates in accordance with the law and that's the assurance that I can give people at home and abroad – our people operate in accordance with the law," he said. "Now, as for the precise workings of our intelligence organisations, it's been a long-standing practice not to comment on them."
Bishop said she would comply with the same practice of not commenting.
German, French and Spanish governments have all reacted angrily to reports based on NSA files leaked by Snowden since June, revealing the interception of communications by tens of millions of their citizens each month. US intelligence officials have insisted the mass monitoring wascarried out by the security agencies in the countries involved and shared with the US.
DSD’s motto is “Reveal their secrets: Protect our own.”
A spokeswoman for Bishop repeated that she would not comment on intelligence matters. And a spokeswoman for Kevin Rudd said the former prime minister did not want to comment on the revelations.

Indonesian 'Anonymous' hackers deface scores of Australian websites in revenge over spying
Hackers claiming to be part of the ‘hacktivist’ collective Anonymous have responded to Edward Snowden’s latest revelations about the NSA using Australian embassies to spy in Asia – by defacing the websites of scores of small Australian businesses.
A group calling itself Anonymous Indonesia replaced the front pages of over 200 websites with the .au address and the message “Stop spying on Indonesia!,” along with a selection of images of varying offensiveness.

Among those caught in the diplomatic payback were sites such as brisbanetimberwindows.com.au, perthclairvoyant.com.au, and petprotector.net.au.

It is not clear whether the choice of sites - which do not appear to have an overt connection with espionage - was random or based on their technological susceptibility.

Anonymous is a decentralized collective, and almost anyone can operate under its banner, which guarantees media attention. The group, which pursues a broad selection of targets, both political and social.
Earlier this week, documents reportedly obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and passed along to Der Spiegel magazine in Germany revealed the existence of a program called STATEROOM, which used the diplomatic facilities of Washington’s closest partners, including Australia, to house American surveillance equipment.

Screenshot from ozchess.com.au

Among the Australian missions named were Jakarta, Bangkok, Hanoi, Beijing, and Kuala Lumpur. The document revealed that the “true mission [of the equipment] is not known by the majority of the diplomatic staff at the facility where they are assigned.”

Another report in the Guardian on Sunday showed that Australia’s Defence Signals Directorate and the NSA worked alongside each other to spy on top Indonesian officials during the UN Climate Summit in Bali in 2007. The effort of the intelligence teams was aimed at obtaining the personal numbers of Indonesian officials “in case of an emergency.”

Despite outrage from the countries involved, which are some of Australia’s principal economic partners, Canberra has refused to address the issues, citing a long-term policy of not commenting on matters of national security.

In the past few days, there has been a flurry of Anonymous-labeled attacks in Southeast Asia, showing that perhaps after being weakened in the US following a series of arrests, the collective has gained new followers further afield.

On Saturday, Anonymous Philippines defaced government websites - including embassy and regional authority pages - to protest government corruption and call on its supporters to attend a rally on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day. The date will be marked by worldwide Anonymous-backed demonstrations that will tackle local and global issues.

"We apologize for this inconvenience, but this is the easiest way we could convey our message to you, our dear brothers and sisters who are tired of this cruelty and this false democracy, tired of this government and the politicians who only think about themselves," the group said on its Facebook page after disabling official websites.

Earlier this week, Anonymous also threatened to hack government servers in Singapore, in response to a new media licensing law that will force outlets to place a bond with the government, which can be lost if it publishes content that “undermines racial or religious harmony.”

“We demand you reconsider the regulations of your framework or we will be forced to go to war with you. For every time you deprive a citizen his right to information, we will cost you financial loss by aggressive cyber intrusion,” said a digitally-altered voice of a masked man in a video posted on YouTube.

“Now close your eyes and imagine a legion of Anonymous unleashed upon your tiny little island and infrastructures. It will be like dipping yourselves into a pool of piranhas.”

Anonymous later hacked local newspaper Straits Times, after one of its bloggers said the threat was a declaration of war on Singapore, saying that it was only challenging the government, not the people of the country.
